Let’s Talk: The Nu New

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Blogging is the new black.  So is pink, purple, tweeting, sexting, and iPhones.  What happened to people and things being just who or what they are?  Is assimilating new thoughts into our hard-wired cognitive structuring through comparison the only way we can progress?

Take the following examples:

magaga

Has Lady Gaga ever heard a Madonna record? Most likely.  But, can Lady Gaga just be Lady Gaga?

hallepaula

Yea….No.  Does one pretty-young light bright mean the end of another pretty-no-longer-as-young light bright’s reign?

3020

I’m closer to 30 than 20, but this just sounds like some old people shit.  I’ve loved most all of my ages, but I’d never want to do them again.  Let it go, love the life you’ve had and the one you are living today.

Maybe “This is the new That” is just a trendy catchphrase.  I think its another system of labeling and classifying everything that is new, misunderstood, or mysterious to make ourselves (i.e. media) more comfortable.

We have to be careful of how far we allow folklore to surpass fact before, indeed, fiction becomes the new fact.

Is that Diggy?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

I have to admit that I actually used to like to watch Run’s House.  It was entertaining to me and since there’s never anything on TV, it was a nice show to just sit back and watch.  Well I’m not posting about the show.  I haven’t watched the show in a really long time (I don’t even think I watched it this year if it’s still on).  Dangerously Beautiful takes tons , so TV really isn’t a priority.  Anyhow, I came across a mixtape of Diggy.  WTF? I thought Jojo was the “rapper” of the kids.  Try again!  Kinda funny to me.  I don’t think he will be the next Jay Z, but he holds his own.  Much better than Jojo.  What are your thoughts?

It’s Complicated

Monday, December 28th, 2009

itscomplicated

I went to the movies last night and watched It’s Complicated.  I’m a huge Meryl Streep fan and she lived up to her reputation in this movie.  Great story, with plenty of comedy.  It wasn’t a comedy like Friday or Bad Boys 2, but it was definitely entertaining.  In the movie, her husband cheated on his wife, then married his mistress and now he’s having an affair with his ex wife. Talk about drama!

The only thing that didn’t sit well with me were the roles of the kids.  I mean I don’t want to be harsh, but they had been divorced for 10 years and the way the kids acted was as if they were 12 and they just got sperated 2 weeks ago.  I’m know it’s tough, and it must be difficult to see parents break up and make up to break up again, but I think it was a little overdone.  Oh well, everyone deals with things differently, so I won’t judge.

If you are looking for a great movie to see and you are a fan of my Dangerously Beautiful lady Meryl Streep, check out It’s Complicated.

Winter Marching Orders

xmas shopping

I hit the mall on my lunch break. It’s so exciting to see all those other lunch-breakers scrambling and rushing about with their corporate casual attire and arms full of bags. I saw one woman who was decked the heck out from head to . . . mid-shin.

Of course I give her a pass for them damn boots. I mean, they weren’t awful and the ground is snow covered. They didn’t flow well with the outfit but for all I know she may pull a Lynda Carter and change into some super-cute stilettos when she gets to her office. Don’t get me wrong, if the skies pour forth and the temperature drops under -2, I will opt for warmth as well, I guess. But let’s get to the real issue here: The Boot Waddle.

Ladies, be your Dangerously Beautiful selves. I know that an all leather outer with a fleece-lined inner along with frozen toes and 3 pairs of socks is a heavy load to carry but come on, now! You have got to pick up those feet and march a little. I have seen more otherwise glamorous ladies dragging their slew-footed stance across the city then I care to say. I’ll even admit, when I had to fight my way through the mean “streets” of Toys R Us, I did it, too. But no more. Strut, girl.

I’d Do It All Again

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

CorinneBaileyRae

I’d Do It All Again is the first single from Corinne Bailey Rae’s  new album, The Sea, due in stores January.  This is the first album since the death of her husband and I’m sure the songs on this album will reflect on that tragedy.  I absolutely love her mellow voice.  The perfect kind of music to just unwind and let everything go.  Beautiful song. Corinne puts so much emotion into the song that  it doesn’t matter if you can’t make out all the lyrics because you feel it.

I have to admit that I love to shake my ass and drop it low, but sometimes I need to recuperate and recover, and that’s what her music assist me in doing.  Her voice comes to you in different layers and levels.  A true artist that makes beautiful music.  Simply Dangerously Beautiful.  Enjoy!

What Would I Think . . . ?

trey-songz-invented

Usually I don’t like overly suggestive lyrics with imagery to match. Also, I wasn’t really feeling Trey Songz when he first introduced himself on the music scene. I actually thought he was somewhat of an annoyance, so when I first heard all the buzz about his latest single “I Invented Sex” I just rolled my eyes, called him a stank nasty and moved on (after I watched the video . . . twice). I had no desire to purchase the song or put it on heavy rotation, but when it came on the radio and I was in the right company I would kinda jam just a tad.

But then I heard the remix.

I’m a sucker for Usher. Controversy, questions marks and all, I am a fan. And even with the lackluster vocal abilities, I dig Ms. Keri. But that’s not even the point. The song is a more-than-gentle reminder that damn it, I’m grown and it recalls some grown folk stuff that makes you wanna holler like Jill in a TP flick. At 1:51 Jill is happy about a little more than exercising, ladies. Woooo! Work it, Trey!

Pancake Stack with Syrup

Mmm, pancakes.  The name alone pretty much says it all.  Nice hot pancakes with melting butter and yummy maple syrup will make my day anytime.  I can eat pancakes for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.  Although my chain restaurant preference is IHOP, I have to admit that I tend to like homemade pancakes the best.  Even if you don’t cook, you should be able to make pancakes.  They’re quite simple.  You can get creative with blueberries, chocolate chips, or my personal favorite, cinnamon with sugar and a pinch of vanilla.  Also, during these challenging economic times, pancakes are very inexpensive.  The only bad part is that 2 pancakes are about 525 calories.  So make sure not to tip the scale in the wrong direction.

Miami is having its version of winter (a whole 65 degrees), so its a perfect day for pancakes and a nice big cup of coffee.  My stomach is growling just thinking about them!  Happy Holidays.

A Real Tear Jerker

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

mysisterskeeper

Oh boy, what a touching movie.  I wanted to see this movie when it was in the movie theater, but my usual movie date saw it without me.  I’m soo glad that I didn’t see it  in public.  It really made me cry.  What a crappy situation.  I hate to be the one to give away what happens in a movie, so I’m not going to give a step by step synopsis.  I myself am an iron deficient anemic with sickle cell trait.  I’m not 100% “normal”, but I don’t have cancer (well at least not at the moment).  I’ve gone through blood transfusions, abnormal bleeding, and many, many days of just being tired.  Overall though, I’ve been able to live close to a “normal” life.

This movie sheds light on a girl living with Leukemia with her life constantly being threaten to end only to be saved by her sister.  From the producers of The Notebook (another awesome movie with some tears at the end), they really show aspects of the entire family.  I can’t imagine being the mother, father, brother, or the sister of someone dying of such a disease.  It’s just heartbreaking.  So I reccommend seeing this movie anytime your family starts to get on your nerves.  Yes, family members can do some awful things and can be annoying, but they’re family.  It’s a bond that can never be broken.  If you disagree, watch this movie and you will suddenly appreciate them.
