Sesame Street is 40

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

sesame street

Can you believe that we have been watching the 8 foot, yellow feathered 6 year old for 40 years (I’m not forty yet so it’s been around my whole life). Sesame Street turns forty today. I can remember countless mornings of my mother yelling at me to get ready and not being able to break away from The Count long enough to put on my socks.

Sesame Street was created as an experiment to see if children could be taught by television. What a great experiment? If only TV was kept for positive influence for children, the world would be a brighter place.

Well I don’t know if Sesame Street can compete with Dora the Explore or Sponge Bob in the area of popularity, but I know that it’s my preference. My favorites by far would have to be Oscar the Grouch and Kermit. The Grouch always spoke what was on his mind and Kermit is just super cute! It still amazes me to know that the same guy that brings Big Bird to life is the same guy responsible for Oscar the Grouch. It’s not easy being green.

Happy Birthday Sesame Street!

The Age of Woman

we-can-do-it

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this fall, for the first time in U.S. history, women have surpassed men and now make up more than 50 percent of the nation’s workforce. In 1967, by comparison, they accounted for just one-third of all workers.

Not only are women dominating the workforce, but you can see an increase in real estate, earnings, Ph.D.s and even in government. Did you know that double the number of single women are now purchasing homes in America than there are single men?

Ladies, the takeover has begun. It is now time to show the world what we are made of. I’m not a complete feminist, but I am happy to see that women are continuing to leave their mark and not afraid of doing great things and not always waiting around for men to set the mode.

“Women really have become the dominant gender,” said Guy Garcia, author of “The Decline of Men.” “Women are becoming better educated than men, earning more than men, and, generally speaking, not needing men at all.”

Now I can’t say that we don’t need men at all (side wink), but we are capable of accomplishing many things on our own. After all, we are Dangerously Beautiful. In our mind, body, and soul. Keep your heads up high ladies.

RA x Dangerously Beatutiful

Friday, November 6th, 2009

RAtheMC (www.rathemc.com) must be a carnivore. She rips beats apart and eats MCs on the regular. Don’t believe me? Check ANY of her YouTube videos.

While you’re at it, slap yourself for not already being up on her latest mixtape, “Trending Topic,” and go download it immediately.

It’s great being able to link Dangerously Beautiful with females who are seriously on their grind. RA is from the DC-Maryland-Virginia area (DMV) and definitely holding things down- not just for women on the mic, but for lyricism. Check out some of that new- RAtheMC “Whatever You Want,” and see her in our “GRIND” t-shirt.

Star Spangled Banner

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Mary J does her thing singing the Star Spangled Banner at the World Series. I love her version. She definitely put her style on the National Anthem.

Many have sang the Star Spangled Banner, but not everyone can bring tears and chill bumps. While I think Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce did a great job, no one compares to Whitney Houston’s version. She brings down the house. Check the video below and let me know what you think.

riGMA

Rihanna has “broken the silence” on her domestic violence situation, and I commend her.  Domestic violence is a day-to-day real life terror situation that happens too much and goes unreported by many and often ignored by the masses.

I think it takes an amazing amount of strength to discuss what happened to her, and hopefully Rihanna’s speaking out can help others somehow- whether it be speaking out to families, contacting authorities, and possibly saving their lives.

MY QUESTION:  Is it really good to use this as promotion for her album?
Could she have spoken out earlier or later, or is now the best time, when the public eye is on her?  But, it’s Rihanna, the public eye is ALWAYS on her.

I’m all for turning tragedy into triumph, so if she’s using her pain to fuel her progression, AMEN.  But if it’s just fuel for alternate media promotion, tsk tsk.
We can’t know, so I’ll just wish her the best in the future.

Coincidence that new CB album follows shortly?  At least they didn’t make it an outright Kanye v 50 marketing campaign.

Dating tips from The First Lady

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

michelle&barak

Michelle Obama was interviewed by Katie Couric for Glamour’s Women Of The Year Issue this week.  She talks about numerous items such as balancing life as First Lady and surprises she’s encountered as First Lady.  She’s very down to earth and speaks so freely that sometimes I forget that her husband is the President of the United States!

The topic that interest me the most was her dating advice.  She discussed issues that I feel are very important in a relationship. Michelle Obama states, “When you’re dating a man, you should always feel good. You should never feel less than. You should never doubt yourself.” Seems so elementary doesn’t it.  I find that a lot of women are so into pleasing their mate that they sometimes sacrifice themselves.  If things aren’t working  out, it must be their fault or they didn’t do enough to make the other person happy.  Well I agree with Michelle, nothing is worth doubting yourself or feeling less than human.  Not even being alone.  Sometimes you need to be alone to realize just how great of a person you are.

“Cute’s good. But cute only lasts for so long….” Isn’t that the truth!  Thanks First Lady.  We have all heard what you are saying before, but now maybe it will carry more weight coming from you.  Michelle Obama, truly a Dangerously Beautiful woman.

I Wanna Fight Chrisette Michele!

osi-umenyiora-and-chrisette-michelle

Just ‘cause she had a damn Epiphany does not mean she has to make it sound so sweet on my airwaves when I’m trying to figure my next move. I do not need to hear her acting like its all good. I’m done. I don’t even care, just Blame it On Me as long as you go – then get reminded of All I Ever Think About.

Come on, now! She’s acting like she knows how it is with Fragile, but dang it! I got feelings. And she is stepping on them. So bring it, Chrisette. I’m sick of this.

“Got my feelings under control/‘til I turn on the radio.” Humph!

For real. I’m late as hell, but this album is talking to me today. You betta run that gamut of romance and emotion.  Sing, baby!

Officially Holiday Time

Peppermint Mocha

I know many use the change of weather or fashion to get in the mood for the holidays. Well I’m a little different. It’s when I see those red cups at Starbucks. The Red Cups are here!!! That means it’s holiday time!

You see living in Miami, we don’t really get a season change. For instance its already November and we still have 90 degree temperatures and people are still going to the beach. Everyone wears shorts and sandals and you can’t straighten your hair yet because it is really hot and humid! Gotta say I wouldn’t mind a little cold front (70s please), but I would prefer this over being snowed in any day.

Anyhow, I have cut back on my latte allowance because of the “tough” economic times, but I am going to have to treat myself to my favorite real soon.  Peppermint Mocha.  Maybe I’ll have the Eggnog or Gingerbread latte. Oh boy too much goodness.  Happy Holidays all!
